Reflexology is thought to help bring balance to the body, which is important for maintaining good health. These points correspond to the various organs and structures of the body. Put simply, the foot can be seen as a map of the body. Sue discovered the benefits of reflexology nearly 20 years ago and went on the qualify as both a yoga teacher and a reflexologist. She now specialises in reflexology and yoga for children.
Sue Brennan looks after reflexology for Aigburth Physio. Reflexology is a gentle relaxing therapy that encourages the body to balance and heal itself. It involves applying pressure with fingers, thumbs and knuckles to ‘reflex points’ on the soles, tops and sides of the feet.
At Aigburth Physiotherapy we see a number of benefits with reflexology. They include:
- Feelings of deep relaxation
- Relief from stress, anxiety and tension
- Improved mood
- A general sense of health and wellbeing
Can everyone have a reflexology treatment?
In most cases, yes. However, there are certain conditions where reflexology should be avoided or your doctor’s permission may be required before you start treatment.
Will it hurt?
The sensitivity of the feet varies from person to person and the trained practitioner will understand the correct pressure to apply and how to interpret the tenderness felt. The massage should not be very uncomfortable to even the most sensitive of feet.
How long does the treatment last?
The full treatment session will last approximately 45 minutes and at the end of a session the feet should feel warm and the patient relaxed. The number of treatment sessions required will vary depending on the condition being treated.
After your treatment
It is important that you drink plenty of water after your reflexology treatment and avoid alcohol/drugs and excessive exercise. Try to rest as much as possible for the rest of the day.
After a treatment it is not unusual to experience a healing reaction such as tiredness, headache or an increased need to visit the toilet more often. These are normal reactions and should not last longer than 48 hours.
